The Perdido River demarcates the state line between Alabama and Florida. At the Barrineau Park put-in, the Perdido begins semi-swiftly and continues this way for about 10 miles, where the flow begins to slow slightly. For the final 4 or 5 miles, you must actually use your paddle to propel your boat, for the current is minimal. During the first half of the trip, you’ll have plenty of pebbly white beaches where you can set up camp or romp in the water. The second half brings you through wider and deeper water that is serene and well suited for both paddleboats and anglers in motorboats. The trip begins at Barrineau Park at an old wooden bridge. There is a wide beach here, where parents like to take their kids during the day. After dark the place sometimes becomes more of an adult playground, where people congregate around campfires for fun. Unfortunately, the beauty of the river is somewhat spoiled by careless visitors who use it as their beverage-can trash bin. The miles of wooded areas along the banks of the Perdido are a sportsman’s paradise. Along the route you’ll see lots of NO TRESPASSING signs and signs for hunting camps. Much of the land along the river is private hunting camps. You’ll see a few trailers set up on the larger beaches where hunters spend the night. The final section of the river is popular with anglers, who reel in bass and bream. You’ll see lots of small bayous and feeder streams that can be navigated for short distances. If you paddle into a bayou or stream, many times you’ll get a glimpse of an environment that’s quite different from that of the river itself. There are a few bayous along the way covered in lily pads that provide the nesting ground for tiny frogs no bigger than your little fingernail. If you exit your boat, watch where you step; you’re likely to get some of the creatures underfoot.
