Starting alongside scenic Lake Sumatanga, this hike explores a portion of the steeply sloping northern side of Chandler Mountain. The path is rocky and very steep in places. Camp Sumatanga retreat is owned and operated by the Methodist Church. While the facilities and surrounding land are used primarily by registered guests, the trails are open to the general public during the day. This gorgeously shaggy hike satisfies a real need for a walk on the wild side. Used far less than the more popular Red Trail, this trail exudes a real sense of remoteness. Beginning by the lake, the trail climbs up the steep side of Chandler Mountain and eventually picks up a southwesterly course about halfway up the forested slope, roughly paralleling the ridge above. You’ll work your way back down to the lake on a section of the steep Mountain Trail, follow a small creek that empties into the lake, and then follow the lakeshore back to the dam.
